Biography
With her edgy, soulful voice, Halina takes you on a journey back to an era when powerful, charismatic female vocalists owned the stages. Her songs fit somewhere between jazz and folk music, drawing influence from music icons like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, Feist and Elliot Smith.
In 2009, Halina released her first EP Puget Sounds, and she’s currently recording a new EP in the woods of upstate NY, to be released in the summer of 2011.
Her single “Story of a Ghost”—and various remixes of the song made by Swedish house producer Alf Tumble—was recently released on Centric records (UK). Halina is also featured on Marco Del Horno’s song “Black Diamond” from his latest record Wake Up Call.
From fall of 2007 through 2009, Halina toured the world with Coheed and Cambria as their Background vocalist.
Background
Halina was born in 1984 in Stockholm, Sweden, spent her early years in the heart of Paris and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She began playing the violin aged four, but drifted away from classical music when she discovered the world of jazz, soul and gospel as a teenager. Later, in high school, she was a part of the Swedish-French hip hop group Avalon, fronted by Mohombi Moupondo, who recently released the solo album Movemeant with the celebrated Swedish producer RedOne. During this time she also played in the punkrock group Chick Habit that released the album More More More More on Silence Records in 2005.
A year later, she moved to LA to study jazz at the Los Angeles Music Academy and soon landed a job as Coheed and Cambria’ s backing vocalist, and spent the following two years touring the world with them including performances on the Jimmy Kimmel Show, MTV Live and shows at Madison Square Garden, Staples Center among many other renowned venues all over the globe.
